ABI: Employers see the "benefits" of buying medical insurance for staff
The Association of British Insurers (ABI) has claimed that more employers are taking out health insurance policies for their employees.

According to the association, the number of people covered by private medical insurance last year was over six million.

Jonathan French, a spokesperson for the ABI, believes that a big reason for the rise in figures is due to the fact that employers are seeing the benefits of having their staff covered.

He believes that insurance cover benefits the company in that staff can recover and get back to work quicker following illness or injury and also it can be used as an attractive recruitment perk.

"There's also the argument [that] in an increasingly competitive labour market, employers are using add-ons, like offering private medical insurance to ensure that they can recruit and retain the best quality staff," Mr French said.

Recent research by BUPA revealed that sales of private medical insurance policies were 20 per cent higher than last year.
