Apprentice minimum pay to rise Skills secretary John Denham has announced that apprentices in the UK will have to be paid a minimum of £95 a week in regulations that come into force next year.
News website Personnel Today stated that in a speech to the Trades Union Congress in Brighton yesterday, Mr Denham revealed that the base rate of pay would rise by £15 a week over the next 12 months in a continued effort to save the sector the Conservatives "destroyed".
He said: "We have rescued apprenticeships. We have trebled the number of people taking them since 1997.
"More than 60 per cent of people now complete their apprenticeships compared to just over 20 per cent a few years ago."
It was also noted that Mr Denham outlined the government's intentions to make learning qualifications in workplaces available to 20 per cent of young people in England.
John Denham first became an MP in 1992, working for the Department of Health in 1999 and also becoming a member of the Privy Council in 2000.
