Australian Catholic teachers to strike
Up to 4,000 Catholic school teachers in Australia are set to strike today in support of the state school teachers who are involved in a dispute over pay and employee reward.

According to the Victorian Independent Education Union (VIEU), 65 of the 480 Catholic schools in Victoria will be forced to close as a result of the action.

Deb James, VIEU general secretary has claimed that it is impossible for Catholic teachers to agree on a pay deal before state school teachers have.

She added: "Staff in Catholic schools are determined to stand up for what they believe in. They will not be stopped on this issue."

Teachers in the state sector are asking for a wage rise of 30 per cent over three years, considerably higher than the 3.25 per cent which is being offered by the government.

The VIEU represents over 14,000 workers in non-government schools in Victoria.
