BWU abandons strike plans The Barbados Workers Union (BWU) has announced that the planned national strike has been cancelled.
BWU members were planning industrial action over disputes at The Royal Shop and Sandy Lane hotel.
The Barbados Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI) has expressed its relief at the decision.
In a statement the BCCI said: "In our opinion, such a threat was premature and disproportionate to the issues without allowing the usual industrial relations protocols and procedures to be exhausted."
BCCI went on to say that Barbados has enjoyed a "relatively stable industrial relations climate" for a long time and this has resulted from "the efforts of all concerned".
After 30 employees at The Royal Shop and Sandy Lane Hotel were fired because they had refused to work in support of two other workers who had been sacked, the union took action.
The BWU was established in 1941 and has around 25,000 members.
Another chapel of the National Union of Journalists (NUJ) has voted for industrial action after editorial staff at Darlington's Northern Echo voted for a walk-out over pay.
