Clamp down on lorry driver protest
Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, the country's prime minister, told hauliers that they had to start "behaving responsibly".

It was reported that armed police were used to get traffic moving and restore calm

Lorry drivers who want to work were offered a police escort following clashes between protesters and those who refused to strike.

A Press Association report estimates that 12 per cent of Spain's 380,000-vehicle trucking industry remains on strike.

"The government is going to have zero tolerance for any act of intimidation or violence," said Mr Zapatero.

Some fuel pumps have run dry following panic buying of fuel by the public, while supermarkets are also reporting food shortages.

The strike began last week which followed in the wake of a fishermen's protest across Europe also stemming from the high cost of diesel.
