Compulsory audits 'may not help close pay-gap'
The introduction of compulsory pay audits may not result in closing the gender pay gap, human resource (HR) professionals have told Personnel Today.

Ahead of a government debate over the future of the Equalities Bill, the Fawcett Society published an open letter in the Guardian calling for action over the perceived "slow pace of progress towards equal pay for women".

In the letter the society quotes government figures which state that "unlocking a woman's full potential" could be worth 1.3 per cent to two per cent of GDP.

Despite this, Personnel Today reports that HR professionals feel in-house pay audits may not be applicable to smaller businesses because the money could be better spent elsewhere.

Speaking to the publication, Christian Armstrong, head of HR at hotels group Thistle, said: "We must do our best not to apply a one-size-fits-all approach to fixing the pay gap."

Furthermore, Victoria Hemming from the Royal National Institute for Deaf People said that the money used for pay audits could be used to ensure more flexible working practices, which would in turn give women access to a wider range of jobs.

The Equalities Bill was introduced into the House of Lords in 2005, one of its main functions is to promote equality of opportunity between women and men.
