Conservatives: 2m pensioners worse off Pension credit rises will be wiped out by inflation, resulting in two million pensioners losing up to £100 this year, it has been claimed.
The Guardian today reported the figures released by the Conservative party, led by shadow chancellor George Osborne, which emphasised how Britain had become "less fair" over the past decade under Labour.
In Mr Osborne's report, An Unfair Britain, he claimed that the 4.2 per cent increase in guarantee credit would be overtaken by inflation, which would be between 5.2 and 5.6 per cent for pensioners, resulting in a loss of £98 per couple and £90 for each single OAP.
He also criticised Mr Brown's "pursuit of fairness" and added: "This autumn we are going to step up the pressure to make sure that Gordon Brown's obsession with his own short-term survival does not do long-term damage to Britain.
"That would not be fair."
Earlier this month, the Conservatives said that flexible working was the key to tackling retirement in the UK, with retirement being seen as a process, FT Adviser reported.
