Council employees earning top wages
New research has revealed that 40 council employees in Wales are earning over £100,000 in pay and employee reward.

A Freedom of Information request has revealed that seventeen of the 22 councils in Wales spend nearly £4 million on their highest paid employees, reports BBC Wales.

Steve Thomas, chief executive of the Welsh Local Government Association (WLGA), said: "We're talking about the most senior professionals in Welsh local government. These people have been in local government for many years. They're hugely experienced."

He added that these are "top jobs" and "you require the best people to do them".

Two councils, Blaenau Gwent and Ceredigion, had no employees who were being paid over £100,000.

Of the councils which replied to the request, the Vale of Glamorgan was the highest-spending, paying seven employees £776,000.

The WLGA represents local government and promotes local democracy in Wales. It was originally established in 1996 primarily as a representative body.
