Council workers get equal pay case rejected
Female workers at Sheffield city council have had their test claims for equal pay thrown out at a tribunal.

Their case was rejected despite several successful claims by women at other councils in the UK.

Ken Green, assistant chief executive of organisation/development and communication at Sheffield city council, told Personnel Today: "The council is responsible for public funds and we felt in the circumstances that we had to defend the claims.

"We were pleased the tribunal had examined our pay practices and found them to be fair, but were also concerned to ensure we continue to deal fairly with all of our employees in the future."

Female members of staff in jobs such as supervisory assistants, day services assistants and home support workers had made the claim that they were underpaid compared to their male counterparts.

Unions GMB and Unison are set to make an appeal against the decision.

The GMB is a general union and is made of 40 per cent women.
