Employers should 'prepare for war'
The general secretary of a major British trade union has warned human resources professionals that they ought to "prepare for war" after recent economic change.

Speaking exclusively to Personnel Today at the TUC conference in Brighton, Derek Simpson of Unite stated the current economic crisis had caused many to act on low wages after the government's handling of the credit crunch.

Mr Simpson added that human resources needed to help senior managers to understand the demands of unions and workers alike, broadening their views and helping them take into account the rising costs of energy, food and fuel.

He said: "Employers and employees are under pressure, and that is going to push people into conflict.

"We are not seeking conflict, but it is coming to us because of policies outside our control."

Last week, Unite called for early warnings to be given by employers to workers after the bankruptcy of holiday firm XL.
