Employers warned over the importance of transparency
Employers have been told that their employee bonus schemes must be clear and transparent to staff.

Julia Watts, compensations manager at Gallaher, told delegates attending the 'Why retention is not about people but about managers' conference that all employees should be treated equally regarding bonus schemes.

Ms Watts said that companies should focus their reward plans on those who have performed to a high standard rather than basing it on service or loyalty to the firm, Employee Benefits reports.

"Employers should consider shifting the focus of bonuses from service and loyalty towards performance and distribute them fairly amongst all staff [dependant on performance]," she said.

Ms Watts also highlighted the importance of clear communication from bosses regarding employee reward schemes, stressing that it was important that workers knew that everyone had a fair chance of being remunerated for their efforts.

She was speaking at the Human Resources Forum, which is an annual event bringing together over 300 senior human resources professionals and supplier executives to discuss challenges facing the industry.
