Eurostar cleaners to strike over pay Over 120 train cleaners employed by Eurostar are planning to strike over Bank Holiday Monday in order to secure London Living Wage (LLW), it has emerged.
The cleaning staff, which are members of the Rail Maritime and Transport (RMT) union, plan to take 24 hours off at the beginning of next week in a dispute over the current wage of £6.37 an hour - over £1 an hour short of the LLW.
RMT's general secretary, Bob Crow, spoke out against contractor OCS, which he said did not supply its staff with a pension scheme, sick pay or extra pay during overtime and bank holidays.
He said: "Eurostar trades on its ethical reputation and claims to tread lightly on the planet, yet it seems happy for OCS to stamp all over the people who keep their trains and stations clean."
At the beginning of the month on Personnel Today, London mayor Boris Johnson stated that the LLW would not have "much inflationary impact" on the economy.
