Gender pay gap still evident
On average women around the world are being paid 16 per cent less than men, according to new research.

A report from the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC), titled the Global Gender Pay Gap, has analysed statistics from 63 different countries from around the world.

Sharan Burrow, ITUC president, said: "Despite decades of anti-discrimination legislation and changes in company rhetoric, the pay packets of women, whether they are in New York or Shanghai, are still significantly thinner than those of men."

She added that the positive news for workers is that trade unions are "succeeding in bridging the pay divide".

The report also revealed that more educated women are often the ones that are being paid less than their male counterparts who have a similar education. It also showed that internationalisation is playing a part in closing the gap but by lowering men's wages rather than raising women's.

Representing over 168 million workers, the ITUC operates in 155 countries.
