HSE reports fall in workplace fatalities The number of work-related fatalities fell last year, according to statistics issued by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).
Findings for 2007-08 show that 228 people lost their lives as a result of workplace accidents or incidents compared to 247 for 2006-07, according to Personnel Today.
Deaths in the construction sector reported a fall for the year, while agricultural workers saw numbers rise from 36 to 39.
"The high levels of fatalities in the agriculture and construction sectors continue to be of particular concern to us, and will be a major focus of the HSE's work priorities over the coming year," HSE chair Judith Hackitt told the publication.
Despite the fall in the number of fatalities, the construction union Ucatt said that the figures made "grim reading".
The Daily Mirror recently reported that workers stand a 43,500 to one chance of being killed in a workplace accident with more than 25,000 accidents occurring in the workplace every year.
