Job losses in Welsh branch of Barclays The announcement that Barclays is to shed hundreds of jobs in Cardiff has been met with anger by Unite, the UK's biggest trade union.
It condemned the high street bank's decision to make redundant what are described as 304 "highly-trained" staff.
The cuts are set to be made after Barclays announced that it withdrawing its First Plus product from the market because of adverse economic conditions.
"We whole heartedly condemn the decision to run down the Cardiff site," stated Graham Goddard, Unite deputy general secretary.
He added that Barclays has a relatively small presence in Wales in comparison to other banks and the union is calling on the bank to replace the lost jobs with new roles for the employees.
It also stated that an agreement has been reached for enhanced notice redundancy payments for those who may have to leave.
The Daily Telegraph reports that Frits Seegers, head of Barclays' global retail business, had been seeking a buyer for First Plus since last year.
