Legal sector pay gaps revealed
Female solicitors earn an average of 7.6 per cent less than their male counterparts, according to findings released by the Law Society.

It recently published its Earnings of Work of Private Practice Solicitors report that analyses pay differentials between different groups of lawyers.

Median salaries for male solicitors stand at £60,000 with females receiving £41,000, which represents a pay gap of 32 per cent.

However, when grade, PQE, region, size of firm, breaks taken, hours worked and area of law were taken into consideration, the gap was estimated to be 7.6 per cent.

Analysis by ethnicity shows that white solicitors earn an average of £50,000 compared to black minority ethnic groups who earn 17 per cent less.

Speaking to the Law Society Gazette, Sailesh Mehta, chair of the Society of Asian Lawyers, said the figures "should shock all decent lawyers. No other profession would tolerate a 17 per cent disparity in pay".

In comments made to the Guardian, chief executive of the Law Society Des Hudson concluded that it was looking to strengthen and broaden work to identify how unjustified pay differences could be eradicated.
