Local government workers 'forced to miss out on holidays'
Thousands of local government workers are expected to miss out on their summer breaks this year, according to new research.

As a result of rapidly rising food and energy costs and below inflation pay rises, many workers will not be taking their families away on holiday this year, according to Unison, the UK's largest public sector trade union.

Heather Wakefield, head of local government at Unison, said: "Many local government staff suffer high rates of stress and low rates of pay. They need holidays to recover or their work will suffer. Families suffer too."

She explained that children may also "feel excluded" when they go back to school because they may have no summer holiday story to share with classmates.

The union is calling for a "catch up and match up" pay rise for local government employees of whichever is larger between six per cent or 50p an hour.

Last week, it confirmed that its 600,000 members will be going on strike in England, Wales and Northern Ireland on July 16th and 17th.
