London buses halted by 24-hour strike
Around 2,500 members of the Unite union have gone on strike over pay in London, causing 80 of the city's bus routes to grind to a halt for the next 24 hours.

The employees are aiming to secure a standard rate of pay totalling £30,000 after rejecting a proposed pay rise of four per cent made by employers First.

Speaking on behalf of the striking workers, Unite regional industrial organiser George Dodo-Williams noted that a further 48-hour strike was planned to commence on September 12th, with employees of other bus companies considering joining the movement.

He continued: "Negotiations have broken down and strike action will go ahead.

"First group are making huge profits while their workers are struggling to keep up with the rising cost of living in one of the world's most expensive cities."

Last week, a proposed strike in London's main transport network, the London Underground, was called off after Tubelines struck a deal with the Rail Maritime and Transport union.
