London living wage goes up to £7.45 Mayor of London Boris Johnson has announced a raise in the London living wage to £7.45 per hour, 35 per cent higher than the government's national limit for minimum wage.
The increase in pay will apply to all Greater London Authority Group staff as well as any possible future contracts, up from the previous £7.20 offered under Ken Livingstone.
Mayor Johnson’s move was welcomed by the Trade Union Congress, with the London regional manager Megan Dobney praising the move in the current economic climate where many workers are struggling to pay bills and general living costs.
The mayor said: "This is not only morally right but also makes good business sense contributing to better recruitment and retention of staff, higher productivity, and a more loyal workforce with high morale."
At the beginning of the month, a 48-hour strike for the London living wage by members of the National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers gained the backing of 47 MPs after claims employers were threatening staff with unemployment and wage deductions.
