Modernisation of PAYE 'delayed indefinitely' The modernisation and centralisation plans proposed for the Pay-As-You-Earn (PAYE) system have been put on hold, delaying the updates past this autumn, a payroll news website has revealed.
Payroll World noted that the changes may not be finalised in 2009 due to the workload the system has created for HM Revenue and Customs officers after security investigations based on the loss of millions of child benefit claimants' details.
It added that the proposed modernisation of the PAYE system will see National Insurance Contributions and individual income tax records "harmonised", an arrangement which Payroll World noted as "keenly awaited" by payroll managers.
A report by the National Audit Office last month had questioned the abilities of the PAYE scheme being able to handle the requests.
It said: "According to the departments risk monitoring, seven of the major programmes at March 2008 had issues requiring attention to ensure delivery of the benefits within the planned timescales."
