MP pay and pension recommendations issued The government has published Sir John Baker's recommendations on the reform of MP's pay and pensions, in which three key issues have been outlined.
Sir John has advocated the idea of establishing an independent body that oversees and determines MP's pay and pensions, where he recommended that the senior salaries review body (SSRB) should extend its remit and take on the role.
Relating to MP's pay for 2008-09 to 2010-11, the report recommends a staged increase to MPs' salaries to bring them closer in line with those of other public sector workers "doing similarly important jobs".
This would result in MPs receiving a 3.5 per cent pay increase, taking salaries from £61,820 to £64,634.
It is also recommended that MPs' pensions should follow suggestions made by the SSRB in principal, however the report added that continuing consideration of the issue is needed.
Sir John stated that MPs' expenses should come under the jurisdiction of the independent body.
Expenses came under considerable media scrutiny recently, following unfounded allegations that the Commons speaker Michael Martin misused his allowance.
