MPs' pensions costing taxpayer double original estimate
MPs' pensions are costing taxpayers over double what was originally believed, it was claimed yesterday.

The annual report of the House of Commons stated the public may have to pay for a third of MPs' pensions, which is double the official estimate.

Matthew Elliott, of the TaxPayers' Alliance, said: "Making the taxpayer foot the bill for unrealistic pensions is unfair and it has got to stop. Over-generous deals like this add to the growing feeling that politicians are taking advantage of the public financially and widen the growing rift between taxpayers and MPs."

He added that the same politicians "instruct the public to be prudent and to save more money" and the "hypocrisy is breathtaking".

MPs receive one of the most generous pensions schemes in the world, an MP who has been working for 20 years can receive around £30,000 a year after they retire.

The TaxPayers' alliance campaigns for lower taxes and better government.
