Ofsted officials to strike
Nearly 1,000 Ofsted officials are to go on strike over disagreements concerning pay increases.

Members of Unison and the Public and Commercial Services union (PCS) are to begin their action on Friday in protest at the below-inflation wage increase they have been offered by the school watchdog.

The union's concerns centre on the fact that the imposed pay rise would involve staff becoming part of a new three year wage structure which guarantees a two per cent hike in the first year and a one per cent rise in the second and third years.

Neil March, of the PCS, said that Ofsted must make an improved offer if it wants to avert the strike action.

"If Ofsted wants to avoid this industrial action it has to demonstrate a commitment to an improved offer with decent cost of living increases to all staff, instead of leaving significant numbers with no pay increase for two years and others with awards that are below even the government's inflation figure," he said.

Two-thirds of union members agreed to the strike action.
