Opposition attacks government over pensions
The leader of the Australian opposition Liberal Party has criticised the government's treatment of retirees and indicated that there could be cause to raise the level of state pensions.

Brandon Nelson claimed that Australia's pensioners "deserved a lot better" in comments made on ABC's Insiders programme.

According to a report in the magazine Global Pensions, Mr Nelson said the government's recent budget did not deliver for pensioners.

"It's approaching impossible for the men and women whose sacrifices made this country what it is, to live on the base rate pension as it currently is," said Mr Nelson.

He added that he was strongly of the view that it was time to strengthen the financial position of pensioners.

However, he refused to comment on his party's draft policies for pension reform before they were ready for consultation.

The Australian budget was issued on May 13th, which is to include an Aus$3.9 billion (£1.9 billion) Future Fund to help smaller businesses reach their superannuation choice requirements, according to Global Pensions.
