Pension data stolen
Accountancy firm Deloitte has admitted to losing a laptop containing the details of pension funds belonging to workers of major British organisations, it has emerged.

National Insurance numbers, names and salaries of workers from the British Transport Police, Network Rail and BSkyB were noted by the company as details contained on the missing laptop.

Deloitte added that there was a number of security systems in place to prevent the theft of information, including passwords, operating system identification and data encryption, adding that there was a very low risk of access.

In a statement, a spokesman from Deloitte said: "We believe that the likelihood of unauthorised access to the data held on this laptop is remote due to the opportunistic nature of the theft and the security controls."

Deloitte was established in 1845 under William Welch Deloitte, with the company announcing revenues in excess of $27 billion (£17 billion) in May 2008, an increase of 18.6 per cent on the previous year.
