Photographers claim to be harassed by police
The general secretary of the National Union of Journalists (NUJ) has sent the Hhome Ssecretary Jacqui Smith a letter following complaints from photographers that they were under surveillance from the police.

In the letter, Jeremy Dear, NUJ general secretary, asserts that photographers must be able to work free from threat, harassment and intimidation.

Members of the Metropolitan Police Forward Intelligence Team (FIT) have allegedly recorded the activities of photographers who have been covering demonstrations of protests in London.

"Recently, the FIT team has started surveillance of press card-carrying journalists who cover and report on protests of any kind," wrote Mr Dear.

The letter called on the Home Secretary to give details on who has access to police databases that hold information about journalists.

Despite police denials that they were not targeting photographers, Dear concluded that "the abuse must stop".

The government introduced Serious Organised Crime and Police Act in 2005, which denied the right to protest in designated areas without prior permission and has been the subject of considerable controversy.
