Police set for legal challenge in pay dispute
The Police Federation has been given the backing of a high court decision to mount a legal challenge against the government over a pay dispute.

A decision was made this month that the dispute over pay and employee reward, and in particular the decision not to backdate the pay rise, can be settled by a judicial review.

Ian Pointon, Kent Police Federation chairman, said: "This is good news for the 3,600 police officers in Kent cheated out of their full pay rise and betrayed by the Home Secretary. The Home Secretary, Jacqui Smith, picked a fight with the police over loose change. We warned her we wouldn't go away."

He added that she now has a "last chance to re-think, backdate the award and more importantly, start to rebuild the trust she has so cavalierly thrown away".

In making his decision, Mr Justice Collins said he had no hesitation in deciding that there was a case for the Police Federation.

Last month an estimated 22,500 marched in London in protest at the government's reluctance to backdate the pay increase.
