Police to vote on right to strike
Police are set to vote today on whether they should legally have the right to strike following a dispute over pay and employee reward.

The vote is being organised by the Police Federation and is expected to take around a month to complete.

Jan Berry, chairman of the Police Federation, told the Financial Times: "When I joined the police force thirty years ago I never imagined that I would one day have to be in a situation of asking my colleagues whether they would want to strike."

She added that the fact that she is in this situation shows "how far relations with the government have broken down".

The dispute has been ongoing since last December and revolves around the Police Federation's demand for their 2.5 per cent pay increase to be backdated to 1st September 2007.

Representing over 139,000 police officers, the Police Federation was formed in 1919.
