Post office network reduced to 11,500
Despite being faced with cuts, the post office network is expected to maintain around 11,500 branches, according to the Postal Affairs Minister.

According to a Guardian report, the network could face ruin if the government decides to give the post office card account, which pays millions of people state benefits, to a rival.

It is estimated that at present 2,500 sub-post offices are in the process of being closed, however if the network loses the card account many fear the number could be higher.

However, Pat McFadden, postal affairs minister, told BBC 1's 'The Politics Show' that the closure process to reduce the size of the network to 11,500 is the correct figure for what the Post Office should be able to provide.

Mr McFadden said: "Part of the rationale for these closures is that it makes the rest of the network that bit more viable."

Some 96 per cent of Post Office branches are operated by sub-postmasters who are independent entrepreneurs.
