Postal workers reject pension scheme changes The Communications Workers Union (CWU) has revealed that postal workers in the UK are considering strike action if the Royal Mail does not change the proposed alterations to their pensions scheme.
In a ballot of CWU members, 92 per cent of workers voted to reject the pensions scheme proposals.
Dave Ward, deputy general secretary of the CWU, said: "The result of this ballot clearly demonstrates that Royal Mail's pension consultation was a sham. With such overwhelming opposition to their plans, if Royal Mail can't find an acceptable solution with the CWU, industrial action will be inevitable."
Royal Mail has already implemented the changes, and claims that the union agreed to them last year.
Less generous schemes for existing staff and new employees are part of the changes as well as retirement being set at 65 instead of 60.
The CWU was formed in January 1995 and with 250,000 members, is the largest communications union in the UK.
Although it is considered a project worth adopting by many countries, Australia's compulsory superannuation scheme is suffering in the face of the credit crunch, it has been stated.
