Printer closedown could axe 140 jobs
Up to 140 jobs could go at Westferry after the Telegraph Media Group (TMG) announced it would be leaving its main printing press by the start of autumn, reported the Guardian today.

The newspaper understood that production at Westferry would be "wound down" through August and would stop completely by September, with the TMG moving to News International plants to produce the Daily Telegraph and Sunday Telegraph.

Negotiations between TMG and Express Newspapers broke down over the future of their joint-venture plant, resulting in the decision to move production elsewhere.

The Guardian added that the Scottish Daily Telegraph would move to the Eurocentral printing press in Scotland.

Speaking to printweek.com, Steve Sibbald of Unite said: "We are expecting 120 to 140 staff to be made redundant but there have been quite a number of volunteers so we would expect them to go first."

Last week, Reuters averted the threat of strike action by journalists after not following up threats of compulsory job losses due to enough staff applying for voluntary redundancy.
