Prison officers set to clash with government over pay
Prison officers look set to clash with the government after voting to work to rule over a disagreement over pay increases.

The Prison Officers Association (POA) voted to call for industrial action following anger at the proposed 2.2 per cent pay award offered to staff, which the union believes is derisory.

Plans include arriving at work at the exact time of the shift starting as opposed to the usual practice of getting there before in order to prepare.

Union bosses claim that prison officers were 'very angry' over the pay increases they have been awarded over the last four years and Colin Moses, chairman of the POA, has called for action.

"The employers and the government have constantly abused the goodwill of staff throughout the UK. It is clear that prison regimes cannot be maintained unless additional resources are put in place if the employees work the hours they are paid for," he said.

With over 35,000 members, the POA is the largest union in the UK, representing uniformed prison guards and staff who work in the secure forensic psychiatric care sector.
