Prison officers turn down pay offer
UK prison officers have turned down their latest pay offer, increasing the chances of a confrontation with the government over pay and employee reward issues.

The Prison Officers Association (POA) has revealed that 85 per cent of its members rejected the government's offer of 2.2 per cent.

A spokesman for the POA described the offer as a "disgrace" and added: "We were hoping that this year's award would reflect the fact that we are still in dispute over last year's pay."

Last year the union was in a dispute with the government after it was announced that prison officer's pay rise of 2.5 per cent would be implemented in two stages, effectively cutting the value to 1.9 per cent.

Justice secretary Jack Straw has defended the offer, saying it is in line with the government's target of keeping public sector pay rises at two per cent.

The POA has over 35,000 members in public and private sectors.
