Public believes gender pay gap is government's responsibility
The majority of people in the UK believe it is the responsibility of the government to bridge the gender pay gap, according to new research.

A report from the Public and Commercial Services Union (PCS) has revealed that 88 per cent of people who responded to a survey believe that it is the government's job to fix the problem of men being paid more than women.

Mark Serwotka, PCS general secretary, said that the poll shows that the public know that equal pay is still a problem and that "it's the government's job to do something about it".

"It is scandalous that the gender pay gap stands at 19 per cent in the civil service. The government needs to address the gender pay gap, especially in its own workforce, where pay inequality is rife," he said.

According to the research, 94 per cent of people believe that men and women who are in the same jobs should be paid the same amount.

The PCS has around 325,000 members working in government departments.
