Public sector to lobby the government Public servants are lobbying the government for better pay to keep in line with the cost of living and those working in the private sector.
A YouGov survey conducted on behalf of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) found that 90 per cent of respondents agreed with the statement that "when working out the cost of living faced by people who work, the government should include the cost of housing and energy bills".
At present, the government uses the consumer prices index to work out wages of those working in the public sector, which is a measure of inflation that does not take into account housing.
TUC general secretary Brendan Barber said: "This poll shows very wide public support for the fair pay principles at the heart of union campaigning. Voters think that public sector pay should keep up with the cost of living, and that this should include housing."
Mr Barber added that public sector workers also wish to have salaries that are the same as private sector pay.
The government has a target of a two per cent pay increase for the public sector, however the TUC asserts that the current increase in the cost of living is 4.2 per cent.
On Friday, Unison reported that unions representing 250,000 college workers in England have rejected the latest pay proposals from employers.
