Public sector volunteers to get pension contributions boost Public sector workers who volunteer to work in the poorest countries in the world are to be rewarded with over £13 million in new pension contributions.
Currently when workers such as nurses, doctors and teachers volunteer in poor countries they miss out on their pension contributions while they are abroad but a government scheme aims to change that.
Dawn Primarolo, public health minister said: "Our health service workers who volunteer can really make a difference in developing countries. And there are huge gains for the UK health service."
She added that staff who get volunteer get "unique opportunities to develop their skills" which they can then "put to use in the NHS" when they are home.
The decision by the government follows a report by Lord Crisp on how the UK can improve its links with poorer and developing countries.
Although it is considered a project worth adopting by many countries, Australia's compulsory superannuation scheme is suffering in the face of the credit crunch, it has been stated.
