British workers have been encouraged to read during their breaks to develop a healthy mind, as opposed to smoking or similar activities, it has been revealed.
The Adopt a Book Scheme has been put forward in a joint initiative by the National Literacy Trust and the Book People, a proposal that hopes to discourage people from cigarettes and convert old smoking rooms in offices into reading rooms.
As well as this, the Book People will ask employers to choose a book for their staff to read, with their chosen publication being delivered to the workplace at a discounted price.
HR Review noted that the scheme hopes to encourage discussion and interaction between employees, leading to a boost in communication, morale and teamwork.
Guardian blogger Hermione Buckland-Hoby said, however, that "something as wonderfully subjective as a novel is much more likely to get people arguing than nodding along with team-spirited assent."
