Research links gender pay gap to child poverty
Previously unreleased figures have shown that the gender pay gap is a key factor in the level of child poverty and a campaign group is calling on the government to ensure equal pay for women.

According to research from the Fawcett Society, a third of children living in poverty have a mother on low or no income, while more women moved into low paid jobs after becoming pregnant.

The campaign group is calling on the government to bring women's pay in line with men's and to end discrimination from employers against those who become pregnant.

Cath Speight, political officer of Unite, said that steps must be taken to protect females in the workplace.

"Women have waited long enough for equal pay - urgent action is now required if the government is to achieve their target of eradicating child poverty. The welfare of children cannot be separated from that of their mothers," she said.

The Fawcett Society fights for equality for men and women on issues such as pay, pensions and poverty.
