Scottish strike sees 150,000 walk out
Unison, GMB and Unite members left their posts yesterday as Scotland saw 150,000 workers walk out over a pay dispute.

The local authority workers, who make up six per cent of the country's workforce, brought schools, waste collection and other public services to a standstill after disagreeing with a proposed pay rise.

Union members were offered a 2.5 per cent increase, which falls short of the current inflation rate of 4.4 per cent - something that workers believe is a pay cut.

General secretary of Unison, Dave Prentis, noted that the solidarity between workers and unions showed that members were determined to get a better deal from local authorities.

He added: "It is time that Scotland's employers took note of the strength of feeling amongst their staff and reopened their final offer for negotiation."

Last week, Mr Prentis told Personnel Today that the union movement was gaining importance and power despite the beliefs of employers.
