SNP rejects police pension proposals by Labour

The Scottish National Party (SNP) has rejected an offer by the government after Westminster proposed a reform of the police pension system in Scotland in return for extra funding.

A report by the Scotsman revealed that SNP justice secretary Kenny MacAskill was discussing the offer with colleagues but that the proposal did not "address the extra cost of pension commutation" as well as equal treatment of both police and firefighters by the Treasury.

The disagreement has risen from a difference in opinion over the proposed changes to pensions for emergency services which will allow retiring officers to convert much of their pension into a lump-sum payment.

SNP officials have questioned the Treasury's refusal to provide extra funds to cover the changes, with the Labour government responding by accusing the SNP of "shirking its responsibilities as a government", according to the Press and Journal.

Last week, the SNP said that the UK government was "giving with one hand and taking with the other" after it announced a shake-up of the benefits system.
