Strike ballot for college workers
College workers are to vote to decide if they are to strike over pay and employee reward.

Member of the University and College Union (UCU) will be balloted and if workers vote in favour of strike action, industrial action will be called for 24th April.

Barry Lovejoy, head of further education at UCU, said: "There is continuing frustration among lecturers about the rewards they receive for the professional job they do."

He added that there has been progress in narrowing the pay gap with school teachers but this is being "eroded by less-than-inflation pay awards".

The union is reportedly seeking a pay increase of six per cent or £1,500, whichever is a higher increase.

It is claimed by the UCU that lecturers in higher education do not receive the same level of pay as school teachers.

The UCU has more than 120,000 members in the UK and is the largest post-school union in the world.
