Strike could hit Harrods
Harrods could be hit with strike action in a pay row, the Times has revealed.

The newspaper today reported that some 275 Harrods staff may take part in a ballot proposed by Unite, Britain's biggest union, should Harrods not improve its 3.5 per cent pay offer and restore holiday entitlement.

It added that the balloting process will begin this week and will continue through to August 18th, with a possible strike being called the following week should the members decide to take action.

The Knightsbridge-based luxury department store could lose drivers, warehouse workers, maintenance staff and engineers to a possible strike.

Unite regional officer Debbie McSweeney said that without its workers, Harrods would struggle to handle custom.

She told the Times: "It is difficult to imagine how the shop could function without them.

"If this strike goes ahead, the rich and famous might have to find somewhere else to do their shopping."

In 2006, Harrods closed its final salary pension scheme to new and existing employees, with the BBC reporting that 1,500 individuals would be directly affected by the change.
