Strike for staff at Sellafield The Sellafield nuclear reprocessing plant in Cumbria is to lose just over a tenth of its workforce after it was announced that members of Unite would go on strike.
It was reported by the BBC that 1,200 of the 10,000 workers at the plant will walk out following a vote for strike action after company bosses rejected demands for a bigger rise than the basic two per cent rate offered.
Alan Westnedge, a regional officer for Unite, said that his members were disappointed with the offers, particularly in light of a five per cent rate of inflation.
He added: "This yes vote shows our members are prepared to take part in industrial action and are willing to fight for fair pay and conditions.
"Unite is calling on Sellafield to return to talks and put an improved offer on the table."
Last month, the Whitehaven News noted that Sellafield was under constant protection by police forces after the attacks of September 11th 2001 in the US intensified national security.
