Strikes to continue into next week Public sector workers will strike through into next week, unions revealed yesterday.
Three more days of strike action have been announced my members of the Public and Commercial Services Union (PCS) which will lead to walk-outs to workers at the coastguard, Home Office, the Land Registry and immigration services.
General secretary of the PCS Mark Serwotka commented that pay rises of between one and two per cent were "totally unacceptable" and blamed the current economic situation for the rising problems faced by his union's members.
"People delivering essential services, some of whom earn just above the minimum wage, are seeing their pay eroded by rising fuel, food and housing costs," he said.
The union has 315,000 members over 200 departments and it plans to ballot members as to further action should the current negotiations break down.
Yesterday, the BBC revealed that over 4,000 schools were closed in England and Wales due to staff shortages after striking members of Unison walked out.
