Temporary workers bill 'will not include IT and engineering contractors'
A bill which would give temporary workers the same employee benefits as permanent employees would not include IT and engineering contractors, it has emerged.

According to the Labour MP behind the Temporary and Agency Workers (Equal Treatment) Bill, Andrew Miller, the bill was designed to "exclude professional IT contractors and similar people".

Chief executive of the Association of Technology Staffing Companies (ATSCo), Ann Swain, said: "ATSCo has constantly pointed out that temporary workers in IT and engineering usually earn significantly more than their full-time counterparts and choose to work as contractors because of the flexible lifestyle benefits."

She added that the message is "finally getting through" to lawmakers in the UK.

Throughout the progress of the bill ATSCo has briefed the government and backbench MPs and has been in contact with Mr Miller.

ATSCo was formed in 1999 to provide a voice for the IT, telecommunications and engineering recruitment industry.
