Tower Hamlets council 'could face £1m payout'
Tower Hamlets council may have to pay up to £1 million after a tribunal ruled that they had unfairly dismissed an employee due to age discrimination.

John Wooster was axed weeks before his 50th birthday - had he retired after this age, he would have been entitled to a pension lump sum and other benefits.

Although the tribunal believed there was no doubt as to the council's guilt, Tower Hamlets human resources chief Deb Clarke told Personnel Today that the council did not accept the ruling and would be filing an appeal.

Mr Wooster described the loss of his job as akin to "bereavement" and said of their conduct: "I think it was absolutely disgusting. They didn't even tell me why they'd done it. I had no right of appeal and they wouldn't even give me a reference to help find another job."

Last month the government announced plans to bring forward legislation to outlaw all forms of age discrimination after banning it in the workplace on 1st October 2006.
