TUC: Economy stimulation needs tax cuts
Low and middle-income earners must be the target of a range of tax cuts if the government wants to stimulate the economy in the pre-Budget report, a major industry organisation has said.

The Trades Union Congress (TUC) has sent a letter to Chancellor Alistair Darling to recommend a number of solutions to give people respite from the current economic crisis, including the suspension of housing repossessions, better redundancy pay and higher benefits.

Brendan Barber, the TUC general secretary, said that the pre-Budget report needed to be "as bold" in fighting the problems of unemployment as it has been with the banking crisis itself.

He continued: "Policy must be designed with three objectives in mind: to prevent job loss; to get the unemployed back to work; and to prevent those in unemployment facing hardship."

Earlier this week, Mr Barber welcomed news that the inflation was falling, adding that the Bank of England should make sure they take the opportunity to cut rates again.
