Unions fear pressure to work for free at Games
It recently emerged that many skilled professionals were asked to work for free on the Olympic handover ceremony in Beijing, a human resources news website reported.

Personnel Today revealed that angry trade unions had complained about the London Olympics' organising committee (Locog) and its efforts to persuade members to work for nothing on the Beijing handover as the "prestige" of the event was enough.

One group affected was the entertainment union Bectu, whose president Tony Lennon told the TUC conference in Brighton that the situation must not be repeated, finding designers and production managers under the union's wing to be facing these requests.

Mr Lennon said of a future meeting between Bectu and Locog: "We will be laying down a fairly firm marker that volunteers are not appropriate for all jobs.

"There are concerns that with its enormous budget, Locog is under pressure to cut costs where it can."

Bectu represents over 26,500 members and is based in Clapham Road, London.
