Unison: Government needs to do its part
Public sector workers are subject to unfair demands by the government, which is telling them to tighten belts in the current economic downturn, a union has said.

A spokeswoman for Unison said that it was not right for the government to tell workers that they ought to tighten their belts in the credit crisis as prices were also being allowed to spiral.

The spokeswoman noted that the two per cent pay rise cap was unfair, with the union still in negotiations to change this limitation imposed on public sector workers.

She added that most people, including those working in local authorities, "have not only had no pay rise this year but are also living on the money that they had from last year, so it's increasingly difficult and people are becoming increasingly frustrated".

Last month at the Trades Union Congress, members were warned that a "winter of discontent" could sweep the nation due to a higher level of strikes to the public sector.
