Unison praises the government's fair pay efforts
Unison has given its backing to the government's plan to introduce a national negotiating body for school support staff, aimed at providing guidelines on pay and working conditions.

Christina McAnea, the head of education for the union, said that the decision is a step in the right direction towards fair pay for people such as teaching assistants, caretakers and administrators.

She added that Unison has campaigned for a while, pressing the issue and was pleased that action has now been taken.

"Unison has campaigned long and hard for a fair system to recognise the very positive contribution made by schools support staff," she said.

The body, which will come into force in September this year, is also crucial to the government's aim of extending children's services, Ms McAnea said.

Recently, up to 400,000 members of the National Union of Teachers conducted their first strike in 21 years, in a row over below-inflation pay offers.
